Wedding crashers

So, on Day 2 of our middle-of-the-country-weekend-getaway meet-up, Amy and I went to a fabulously fun backyard Texas wedding (neighbors of our hosts, Toli and Christine). You'll see from the pictures below that this was no traditional affair.

The bride and groom twirling on the dance floor.

The ceremony included a round of cascarones -- a Mexican tradition of confetti-filled eggshells that are broken over people's heads. Perhaps they're for good luck or maybe just for fun. I'm not sure.

Cracking heads.

A pinata for the kids. This girl had one arm in a sling, but she didn't let that--or her pettiskirt--get in the way.
Our most gracious hosts and Austin docents.

Their dog, Stitch, yearning after some Texas BBQ.

Assisted living

Andy first started recording to capture Amalia "helping" me pick up her rice--I'll be in good shape when arthritis sets in. But what really made me laugh is when Lily says halfway-through, after climbing all over my chair, "I'm here!"

A trip to Nats Town

We took advantage of the combination of a Sunday afternoon baseball game and overcast skies to take in our first family trip to see the Washington Nationals play. It was Amalia's first game ever.

She got off to a rousing start. Note that today was free kids t-shirt day. Much better than an eye-bruising baseball.

The stadium has a pretty cool kids area, which is a lot of fun about an hour-and-a-half before the game. As it gets closer, Mommy gets overwhelmed by the number of people and needs to leave.

That's the Washington Monument way in the background.

This is the view from the Family Section. I guess they figure we're not really watching the game anyway.

With the giant-headed Presidents. Amalia clinging to me for dear life.

Getting friendly with Abe.

All in all it was a pretty good inaugural MLB outing for Amalia. We found free on-street parking (compared to $20-$40 for the lots), Andy and I got half-smokes from Ben's Chili Bowl, and we made it close to 4 hours before we had to leave.

Going retro

I recently reorganized (read: cleaned out) the girls' toys, so they've been discovering "new" toys to play with this weekend--including this old house with the little wooden people. With Amalia around, I'm not sure it will make it through another generation.

Lazy Saturday

How much do I love our front yard right now? To be up to my ears in one of my favorite foods ever is quite a joy. Now I just need a Pepsi tree.

Lily organizing another picnic. She's discovered that she likes the new chocolate Cheerios. Mom is wondering just how much of a gimmick that is.

Amalia at the park this morning. She can be kept happy doing just about anything that lets her move.

No offense

This is the shirt Lily selected to wear on Mother's Day. I'm trying not to read too much into it.

And Amalia decided to don her giraffe hat. I'm quite sure she did not intend any comment on my abnormal height.

Pre-K does Mother's Day

The Pre-K classes at Lily's school put on a Mother's Day program yesterday. In the middle of the workday--very convenient. I'm glad I was able to be there, though; I saw what happens when a mom doesn't show up. It isn't pretty.

Lily's buddy Gabe.

The funny thing is, this about the third time they tried to start this song, which is supposed to be sung to the tune of B-I-N-G-O, but with the word, "Mommy." I think the teacher was getting exasperated.

Lily's first speaking role! If you listen very carefully, you can hear her say, "Thank you for coming to our Mother's Day program." You may just have to trust me on this one.

In addition to avoiding costly therapy for my daughter, I walked away with loads of mom's day loot (bead necklace with a locket that has a picture of Lily, painted flower pot, card, and the requisite hand prints in paint).

Simple pleasures

Spraying strawberries picked from our front yard.

Building a stable for our pony friends.

Clean wheels

Maybe the girls can make some extra money detailing neighborhood bikes and trikes.

In other news, Lily seems to have a competitive streak that borders on the ridiculous. I suppose it's typical for big sisters to want to do everything first and faster, but I had to laugh this morning when Lily became upset because Amalia can blow her nose and she can't.

Tea party tactics

What to do when your sister is "ruining your picnic"? Set up a separate one in her room. (I would make a Sarah Palin reference here, but this is a non-partisan family blog.)

Water play

Eating out at a diner for breakfast must have tired the girls out. This is what happened when we got home. Sometimes you just have to lie down and sleep right where you are.

The boys next door got a water table. Feeling refreshed from their mid-morning nap , the girls immediately invaded.

When the boys had to go inside to eat lunch, I was able to distract the girls by offering to fill our wading pool in the backyard.

Each is silly in her own way.
